What Irani Constitution says if President Dies in Service

As the situation in Iran is quite concerning over the crash landing of President Sayyid Ebrahim Raisi’s Helicopter in Western Province of Iran.

A large scale operation is underway to find the wreckage of the Irani President’s Helicopter. which crashed near west province of Azerbaijan.

The Irani Supreme Leader Ali Kahmenei asked Iranian people not to worry about the president and prayed for his safe return

As we have gone through the constitution of the Islamic Republic of Iran. Here what we have found incase President dies in office.

  • In line with the Islamic Republic of Iran’s constitution, article 131. If serving presidents suffers death during his office tenure. The first president will take over the state affairs. After having a consultation with the Supreme leader who will give the final decision in relating to the state matters.
  • Within 50 days of the president’s passing. An election must be scheduled by a council, made up of the Parliament Speaker, the chief justice, and five vice presidents.

Ebrahim Raisi was elected as president in 2021. And next presidential election is scheduled to happen in 2025. As per the Iran’s Constitution it is the supreme leader. Who will give final say in any state matter but not the president. This may include foreign policy, and nuclear program.
